MONUMENTAL - KANAL CENTRE POMPIDOU BRUXELLES
Monumental's ambition is to activate a visual and collective memory resulting from representations of our history, particularly from the history of art, or media and contemporary events.
Monuments, architectures, statues, works of art are the basis of a visual score initially interpreted by a group of 12 performers and choreographers according to a space and defined temporal constraints. Through statuary, architectural heritage and works in the public space, the project through this group displaces the notions of figure, narrative and form.
Since 2017, Jocelyn Cottencin worked sometimes with amateurs or art students to re-create a version of this performance. The first reprise took place at the Beaux Arts in Paris with Emmanuelle Huynh's students. Each cover is an opportunity to question the fabric of forms and images through specific context each time.
For Kanal, Jocelyn Cottencin settled for 15 days in Kanal with students from ULB and Cambre. The different stages of work and process become visible to the public as opportunities to approach the project around the notions of group, community, coalition and the figures they produce.
Monumental was supported by the Hermès Corporate Foundation as part of its New Settings program and was created in 2016 at the Pompidou Center in Paris.

Monumental ambitionne d’activer une mémoire visuelle et collective issue des représentations de notre histoire, particulièrement de l’histoire de l’art, ou des événements médiatiques et contemporains.
Monuments, architectures, statues, œuvres d’art sont la base d’une partition visuelle interprétée initialement par un groupe de 12 performers et chorégraphes suivant un espace et des contraintes temporels définis. Au travers de la statuaire, du patrimoine architectural et des œuvres dans l’espace public, le projet par le biais de ce groupe déplace les notions de figure, récit et forme.
Depuis 2017, Jocelyn Cottencin transmet cette performance à des amateurs ou et des étudiantes/étudiants en art. La première reprise a eu lieu aux Beaux arts de Paris avec les étudiants d’Emmanuelle Huynh.
Chaque reprise est l’occasion de s’interroger sur la fabrique des formes et des images au travers de contexte à chaque fois spécifique. Pour Kanal, Jocelyn Cottencin s'est installé durant 15 jours à Kanal avec des étudiantes de l’ULB et de la Cambre. Les différentes étapes de travail et de fabrication deviennent visibles pour le public comme autant de possibilités d’aborder le projet autour des notions de groupe, de communauté, de coalition et des figures qu’elles produisent.
Monumental a été soutenu par la Fondation d’entreprise Hermès dans le cadre de son programme New Settings et a été créé en 2016 au centre Pompidou Paris.
